چکیده

The ability of neck muscles to react in time to mitigate whiplash injury in unaware occupants remains unclear. A validated head-neck computer model was implemented to determine the effect of reflexive contraction on capsular ligament elongations in whiplash. Contraction parameters were chosen for the maximum kinematic effect. Contraction decreased segmental angulations less than 10% during the retraction phase and decreased capsular ligament elongations in the middle while slightly increasing elongations at the inferior and superior ends of the cervical spine. Due to inherent reflexive contraction delays, it remains unlikely that reflexive contraction can significantly affect the whiplash injury mechanism.

What occupant kinematics and neuromuscular responses tell us about whiplash injury.

STUDY DESIGN Literature-based review. OBJECTIVE To review the published data on occupant kinematic and neuromuscular responses during low-speed impacts and analyze how these data inform our understanding of whiplash injury. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA A stereotypical kinematic and neuromuscular response has been observed in human subjects exposed to rear-end impacts. Combined with various mo...

Proposing a 2D Dynamical Model for Investigating the parameters Affecting Whiplash Injuries

This paper proposes a 2D dynamical model for evaluating parameters affecting whiplash. In fact a four segment dynamical model is developed in the sagittal plane for the analysis. The model response is validated using the existing experimental data and is shown to simulate the "S-Shape" and "initial upward ramping" kinematics of the cervical spine and the resulting dynamics observed in human and...

Facet joint kinematics and injury mechanisms during simulated whiplash.

STUDY DESIGN Facet joint kinematics and capsular ligament strains were evaluated during simulated whiplash of whole cervical spine specimens with muscle force replication. OBJECTIVES To describe facet joint kinematics, including facet joint compression and facet joint sliding, and quantify peak capsular ligament strain during simulated whiplash. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA Clinical studies h...

Kinematic and electromyographic response to whiplash-type impacts. Effects of head rotation and trunk flexion: summary of research.

Despite the fact that whiplash patients often report they had their head rotated or were in a twisted posture at the time of impact, the effect of these postures on the cervical muscle response to impact remains uninvestigated in impact studies. Prior impact studies have positioned the volunteers in the recommended driving position, for example, with head and trunk in a neutral posture. Using a...

Rapid neck muscle adaptation alters the head kinematics of aware and unaware subjects undergoing multiple whiplash-like perturbations.

To examine whether habituation confounds the study of whiplash injury using human subjects, we quantified changes in the magnitude and temporal development of the neck muscle electromyogram and peak linear and angular head/torso kinematics of subjects exposed to sequential whiplash-like perturbations. Forty-four seated subjects (23F, 21M) underwent 11 consecutive forward horizontal perturbation...
